Waste Management

The primary objective of radioactive waste management is to implement an effective control, management and disposal system that ensures the safety of people and the environment today and for future generations, incorporated into which are the following principles of waste managment:

  • Containment - providing an insoluble and stable, solid waste form, which can be isolated from people and the environment.
  • Minimisation - keeping the activity and volume of wastes produced to a practicable minimum.
  • Recycle - reusing valuable resources and materials.

To achieve this objective, the nuclear industry has developed and now implements a responsible waste management strategy that provides for the safe transportation, treatment and conditioning and storage and final disposal of radioactive waste. Financing, public involvement and ethical issues, legislation and a country's national policy on waste management all play important roles in a successful waste management strategy.
